Before/After Breathing

Normal Breathing

The top line of the respiratory waves represents upper chest breathing and the lower line diaphragmatic breathing. The upwards slope of the wave represents inspiration and the downward slope represents expiration.

The example of normal resting breathing shows that the upper chest and the diaphragm have an even synchronised pattern of inspiration and expiration with a short natural pause between.

In normal resting breathing the diaphragm movement drives the lifting of the rib cage, so the upper chest waves should look the same as the diaphragm waves.

Sonny (CP)

Before TST: Sonny’s breathing was shallow, fast and disorganised.

After TST: Sonny’s breathing is now deeper it has slowed down and is much better organised.

Victoria (CP)

Before TST: Victoria’s diaphragmatic breathing was fast and stressful. There was no correspondence between her diaphragm movements and the respiratory movement of her upper thorax which were weak and minimalistic.

After TST: Victoria’s diaphragm breathing is better paced and relaxed. She is now also breathing well at the upper thorax and there is a good correspondence between her diaphragm and upper thorax.

Hunter (ADHD)

Before TST: Hunter’s breathing was driven by his upper thorax very irregular with long periods of breath holding followed bursts of strenuous inhalation.

After TST: Hunter’s breathing is now regular, well organised and diaphragm driven.

Tom (ASD)

 Before TST: Tom’s breathing was emotionally driven and so dominated by the upper thorax. There are long pauses between breaths. His breathing is irregular and the upper and lower thorax do not synchronise.

After TST: Tom’s breathing is now driven by his diaphragm which has become stronger, his breaths are more regular with a good pattern and a synchronisation between the upper and lower thorax.

Emily (CP Hemiplegic)

Before TST: Emily had tight, fast stressful breathing with irregularities between upper thorax and diaphragm.

After TST: Emily’s breathing is now much better paced and rhythmic and her upper thoracic breathing co-ordinates better with her diaphragm
